Happy President’s Day! Regardless of whether you like the President or not for most people any excuse for a long weekend is warmly received. In fact it seems even politicians were looking for excuses to curve the Monday blues. Here are some facts about President’s Day..

· It started in the 1880’s when George Washington’s birthday started being celebrated as a federal holiday.

· In 1968 congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Bill which moved several federal holiday’s to Mondays (Thank you!)

· The name “President’s Day” was originally rejected by congress but became the nationally recognized name due to ad campaigns from major retailers ( do I sense a trend in the power of marketing?)

Say hello to National Chocolate Month!! If you aren’t in love already that ought to have done it! It goes without saying that we eat a few more sweets during the holidays than we usually do, but before you start mentally beating yourself up for that truffle here are some chocolate-friendly facts that might change your mind:

Chocolate contributes less than 2% of the fat in the American diet.

Stearic acid, a fat component that makes up 1/3 of the fat in chocolate, does not raise blood cholesterol. Oleic acid makes up another 1/3 of the fat in chocolate. This fat has been shown to be beneficial to heart health.

Chocolate contains specific antioxidants called polyphenols that are currently being studied for their health benefits.

HAPPY GROUNDHOG DAY!!!

Today the little groundhog crawled out of his hole and determined whether we need to get bikini ready or if we can hold off on shaving our legs for another 6 weeks. I don’t know about y’all but I’ll take the sun and a bikini over more cloudy days in a heartbeat.

This tradition started in about the 18^th century in Europe as a German celebrated holiday. If the little fur ball, named Phil who is quit cute I must say, comes out on a cloudy day it means we are on the fast track to sipping piña coladas by the pool and shopping Saturday markets with our fav Patty Reed bag. If it’s a sunny day, and he sees his shadow, he runs back into his hole and we have another 6 week break from selected personal grooming practices.

Now there’s good news and bad news. Bad news: Phil saw his shadow at 7:20am this morning EST. Good news: He’s not as accurate as your local weather man. Apparently since its recorded beginning there have been 99 shadow sightings and 17 cloudy days, the other 9 were not recorded.

Patty’s birthday bash went great today. All the employees got together at the office for lunch to celebrate and one of her gifts was this high heeled tape dispenser! So cute. The bag giveaway on our Facebook page in celebration was a huge success and congratulations again to our winner Mary Ragan!! 2011 Knight Cancer Institute Donation

The Patty Reed team made the much appreciated check donation to the Knight Cancer Institute at the OHSU Health and Healing Center on Wednesday, November 16th. Breast Cancer Donation
